Meaty Bacon Baklava Recipe
Makes 35 pieces
Ingredients
- 1 ½ pound lean sliced Butterball turkey bacon
- ¾ cup coarsely chopped dates
- 1 cup whole blanched almonds, toasted and coarsely chopped
- 1 package phyllo dough
- ½ cup Splenda
- 10 tablespoons low fat margarine melted
- 2 tablespoons of bourbon
- 1 cup honey
- ½ cup water
- Finley grated zest of ½ orange
Directions
First, preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Next, take the lean turkey bacon and fry it in a skillet until crispy brown. Drain the bacon, crumble and dice in a food processor with almonds and dates.
Second, use margarine to crease a 9-by-13 inch baking pan. Place a sheet of phyllo dough in greased pan. Cut the dough to fit the pan and brush it with margarine. Repeat the same steps 4 more times with the phyllo dough. Take 1 cup of the bacon filling and spread it over the phyllo dough. Repeat the layering with 5 phyllo sheets and bacon filling two more times. Top the pan with 5 more sheets of phyllo dough. Make sure the tip is covered with low fat margarine.
Third, cut the baklava into diamonds. Place the diamond shapes in the oven and bake them for 10 minutes. Turn the oven down from 400 degrees to 325 degrees and bake for an hour, until the entire pan of baklava is brown.
Finally, combine the Splenda, honey, bourbon, orange zest, and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Let the mixture simmer for 5 minuets, and then let the mixture cool to room temperature. Take the browned baklava out of the oven and cover with the cooled syrup. Let the meaty bacon baklava stand uncovered overnight.
